Chapter Nine

It took me about a half an hour to calm down using martial arts meditation techniques, and to at least restore a thin veneer of poised aplomb. It was something that had to be done. It wouldn’t be wrong to say I was resigned to it, but that wasn’t the complete truth either. The idea of having three men I could trust at my beck and call was a heady one, but that they’d also be my responsibility was an intimidating one.

Relationships were two-way streets after all, the loyalty bond didn’t mean I could take them for granted. They did have needs, and not just sexual ones, men needed to be useful and feel appreciated. Needed.

I also had no intention of sleeping with any of them until as the empress said, I’d gained that comfortable level of intimacy with them. They would be my players, my husbands, after today, but the consummation would wait until I felt ready for it. That decision more than anything else helped to calm me enough, at least outwardly, but inside I was still more than a little bit of a mess.

Although, the anti-conception spell had suddenly raised in importance, I’d need to learn that one soon, the next time I made private time to work on my personal repertoire of spell-songs.

The stress and worry had also made me sweat, I looked like a hot mess, so I was doubly grateful for learning that rather vain spell, and played the notes to the cleaning spell on my recorder, while I visualized my body being clean, and focused the earth, water, and fire magic where it needed to be. A second spell took care of the sweat stains on the red dress, and I looked rather immaculate and no longer stunk like fear.

I also felt a million times better, just being clean boosted my confidence.

I moved out of the small room I’d retreated to, and gave Dalen a small smile, who looked at me curiously.

“What?”

He smiled, “You look much better. You learned those spells yesterday?”

I nodded, “Yes. A few others as well.”

Seventeen spell-songs, but I wasn’t going to brag. I’d learned long ago that led to conflict, people were always amazed at first when I could play anything that came on the radio, assuming I’d heard it before, but jealousy always came after. Always.

He grunted, “Remarkable. The first knight you’ll be meeting is Marlin…”

The next three hours was a hell of an experience, meeting those twelve knights. It was also an impossible decision, picking three husbands out of twelve virtual strangers, save Markus. They could all play remarkably well, and not one of them had evoked hate at first sight, nor were any of them unattractive. They weren’t all as yummy as Markus, but a few of them were, but raw attraction was the last consideration I wanted to take into account.

I chose Markus of course. It was still ridiculously early in our relationship to commit to a life together. I hadn’t even kissed him yet, and he’d only last night even confirmed his interest in me that way.
